Marco van Ginkel joins AC Milan on season long loan

We can confirm that Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has joined Italian giants AC Milan on a season long loan. The official site of Chelsea Football Club is soon expected to confirm the same.

After the signing of Cesc Fabregas, last year recruit Marco van Ginkel was left wondering what the future held for him at Stamford Bridge for the season ahead. The 21 year old Dutch midfielder was expected to compete with Mikel and Ramires for the second spot in the double pivot, with the other spot more or less owned by Nemanja Matic. However, another high profile player in the form of Cesc Fabregas competing for the spot meant even lesser game time for the young midfielder.

MvG joins another Chelsea man, Fernando Torres, who is on a two year loan deal at the Italian capital, and former midfield anchorman, Michael Essien who joined the club on a permanent deal last season. This is a win-win deal for both clubs and also the player as Chelsea will be hoping for an even better player in Ginkel when he returns, and it also plays in favour of the maximum foreign player policy of the Premier League. Milan on the other hand will be more than happy to recruit the youngster, who is expected to reach great heights in the game.

However, the main beneficiary would be Marco van Ginkel himself, as this move promises him much more game time than Chelsea could promise this season. And also, he has an opportunity of learning from some of the bests in the position in the form of Michael Essien, Nigel De Jong and Sulley Muntari.

The 21 year old has only made 2 substitute appearances in official competitions for Chelsea since his move from Vitesse.

Here’s what MvG had to say about the move:

“I am very happy. Milan is a great club where many Dutch players have played and some big names. I know Nigel De Jong from my experiences with the National team, I spoke to him about Milan and he said excellent things about the club.

I will see him soon. I am a midfielder that defends but I also know how to score goals. I play all across the park. I want to become an important member of the squad, I am a team player and I want to meet the coach.

Like I said before, I am happy to be here. I want to get game time and I think that I will have the chance to play at Milan in a great league against strong sides.

This is the objective for the season. I haven’t as yet spoken to coach Inzaghi but I have spoken to Fernando Torres this week. He’s a good lad.”

What do you think about this move? Do you think we have enough cover in the position or do you think it was unwise of the club to let him move? Do leave your thoughts and views in the comments section below.
